Filemaker Pro Lesson

Relational Concepts - Internal Tables vs. External Files:

Using a Multikey Match Field

This lesson requires TestClassLookup.fp7 and TestTerms.fp7.

Suppose you have a course that is being team taught. You could create a record for the course title with the first instructor listed and create another record for the course with the other instructor listed but this will produce two entries in the students course schedule instead of one. If you enter the instructor's names separated by a comma, you will see that there is more than one instructor but if you tried to create a relationship to the instructor file so you could see a list of courses taught by a particular instructor you would not have a matching field. Filemaker Pro overcomes this problem by making it possible to create a multikey field. By typing each name followed by a carriage return in the course instructor field, you can still use the field as a match field for defining relationships.

1. Select the layout Test_terms

2. In Browse Mode navigate to Record 1. Click in the "Instructor" field. Notice that both Ben McWhirter and Ellen McWhirter are entered as co-instructors in this class.

3. Select the Advising layout.

4. Select Ellen McWhirter from the drop down list in the "Instructor" field above the last portal. Notice that the courses listed in the portal not only changed but the course Ellen team teaches with Ben appeared in the list.

5. Select File->Define->Database and the Relationships tab. Notice that I created a relationship between the fields Student ID and Instructor ID in the Test_terms and TestClassLookup tables.
