All employees and students at the University of Oregon are provided with free e-mail services. Faculty and staff are provided with accounts on Darkwing and students are provided with e-mail services on the host Gladstone. E-mail to a darkwing account can be sent to username@darkwing.uoregon.edu or simply username@uoregon.edu. The mail clients supported by the College of Education are Outlook Express or Netscape Communicator. Other mail clients may be used but are unfamiliar to unit technical support specialists. The mail client is part of the installation of Internet Explorer or Netscape Navigator. To configure your client check the instructions for the particular client of your choice. If you have problems configuring your client, contact your unit technical support specialist. E-mail can also be viewed with just a web browser. Enter http://webmail.uoregon.edu and select the appropriate host (darkwing for faculty/staff or gladstone for students)or https://darkwing-mail.uoregon.edu/imho/. This method of retrieving your e-mail is particularly convenient if you are traveling and must use a public access computer. Changing your password: The Computing Center requires you to change your e-mail password every six months. This process must be done outside of your e-mail program using http://password.uoregon.edu. However, it is accomplished more easily if you login to your e-mail account first then launch another window with your web browser and change your password using the password utility. After you have changed your password, switch back to your e-mail window and set your new password in your e-mail client. In Outlook Express, select Tools, Accounts, select the appropriate e-mail account and click the Properties button. Click the Servers tab and enter your new password in the appropriate space and check the "Save password" checkbox. Then click Apply and Done. Do not close your email account until you leave for the day. That will give the Computing Center hosts time to update their security index with your new password before you launch another e-mail session. If for some reason http://password.uoregon.edu is not functioning correctly, you can also change your password using SSH. The SSH client is available on your Duckware CD or by typing \\Public\sys\Network Software\Secure into your web browser. Mailing Lists at the UO - Mailing lists allow a large number of people to easily share e-mail with one another. This process is managed by a mailing list management program. All e-mail messages are sent to this central program and then redistributed to the users on the list. The UO Computing Center currently operates a majordomo list server and you may subscribe to lists served by majordomo by sending a subscribe request to majordomo@lists.uoregon.edu. Just enter subscribe and the listname followed by pressing the Enter key in the body of a plain text message. Do not enter a subject and be sure to delete any e-mail signature information that is usually inserted by your mail client. All employees of the college are added to the College-wide coe-staff mailing list upon employment. Any college-related communication to the entire faculty and staff can be sent by College personnel to coe-staff@lists.uoregon.edu. Please refrain from using this list for announcing housing vacancies, virus warnings (most are hoaxes and your technical support personnel will notify their workgroups if there is a valid threat), pet give-aways, or other messages of a personal nature. If you cannot post to this address, send an e-mail to list administrator, Terry Kneen (tkneen@uoregon.edu) to have your name added to the membership list. What can I do about SPAM? The Computing Center negotiated a campus-wide subscription to the Mail Abuse Prevention System and strive to prevent e-mail delivery from known SPAM sites. If you’re getting offensive spam directed to your UO email account, notify spam@uoregon.edu with the appropriate information. Nine Ways to Protect Yourself from destructive e-mail.
