Chadwick, Paul (2000), `Accounts and accountability', AQ Feb/March. Argues for full financial and instititional independence in Australian journalism.

Callaghan, Greg (1999), `Sultans of spin'. The Weekend Australian July 24-25. The dark side of the Australian public relations industry-more than John Laws!

Luntz, Frank (2000), `Public to press: cool it', Brill's Content March. A poll of attitudes to the performance of the American news media. Interestingly, 74% indicated that TV news should not show 'a hostage at gunpoint on live TV' but 59% would still watch it!

McGregor, Judy, Susan Fountaine & Margie Comrie (2000), `From contest to content; the impactof public journalism on New Zealand election campaign coverage', Political Communication 17. Based on a extensive content analysis of the NZ press. this study concludes that 'public journalism' (rather than news coverage) produces more neutral and comprehensive coverage of elections.

Meadows, Michael (1998), `Making journalism: the media as a cultural resource', Australian Journalism Review 20(2). Argues that you can't teach journalism whilst ignoring cultural theory.

McGregor, Judy, M. Comrie & J. Campbell (1998), `Public journalism and proportional representation: the New Zealand experiment', Australian Journalism Review 20(1). How three New Zealand newspapers took a leading role with `public journalism' in the 1996 General Election.

Oakham, Mandy & John Tidey (2000), `Models for the millennium: how the UK and New Zealand train their new recruits', Australian Journalism Review 22(1). Useful information on journalism training in New Zealand and the United Kingdom.

Ricchiardi, Sherry (1999), `Confronting the horror', AJR Jan/Feb. How covering tragedy can generate stress for journalists.

Tuggle, C.A. (1998), `The bias towards finding bias in television news', Communication Reports 11, 1, Winter. Investigates the agenda of much of news content analysis.

Weaver, David (1999), `Who will be journalists in the next century?, Media Studies Journal Spring/Summer. The answer is optimistic: journalists will be more formally educated, more independent thinkers and more likely to be female and from diverse backgrounds.
